THE GIFT By John Lary

The gift of your friendship to me

Is like a precious seam of gold

Running through the earth under my feet:

It enhances my existence

It consoles and uplifts me because of your understanding

Of what a fellow human needs

And when they need it.

The love that you show – quietly – is intangible

Yet it is felt in another way

A way that gives strength and comfort.

And I am so grateful for your being there

A constant in my life.

If there were but time enough – and it could be arranged

I would like to sit with you, take your hand

Speak openly to you of these feelings

So that you would see – in the mirror of my admiration

A reflection your true worth and the beauty of your soul.

The time may come

When we can set aside

The constraints imposed on us by our society

And talk freely of such things.

But that time is not yet.

And so I bow to convention and write

Dearest

I hope that this card finds you well

And that you have a pleasant Christmas.
